Time is on my side

020-2

Well, it seems that this blog will work as a retrospective from my experiences onboard Princess cruises! It’s, at least for me, practically impossible to keep on writing while working on the ship! Too much work, too much stress, too much, just too much everything!

When I got to the internet I’d stay 15 minutes and almost sleeping on the machine! But now I have time to rest and update my blog so that I can tell all about the life on cruises.

For now I just came to update really fast and post one of the pictures I took during my time on Star Princess.

You’ll be hearing very soon from me. Talking about the ports of call, itinerary, food, wine and excellent service.

So, I hope to see you around!!

Life Onboard Star Princess

After two months of hard work and stressful daily routine, I managed to write a new post!

We’ve done the Alaskan season and right now we’re in the middle of the Pacific Ocean heading to San Francisco, where we’re staying for a couple of weeks on dry dock.

Before telling you about the life as a crew member, one thing you must know about Alaska: if you’re not elderly enough to enjoy yourself fishing salmon or doing excursions to glaciers, Alaska is not your place!

I’m not saying that isn’t worth the trip, if you got the money, it’s up to you! But, I’d choose a cruise to Europe, Asia or still Australia before choosing Alaska. Why? Because Alaskan most wanted features are jewerly and smoked salmon shops… do you think that’s funny??

Well, changing the subject from Alaskan cruises to daily life onboard…

That’s no easy life onboard a cruise ship. Everything is essencial to the well being of everybody, even when we struggle with ourselves to be nice to others. You know the saying: what goes around, comes around. So, even when it seems impossible to be nice and to your best, one must try harder and harder…

The routine onboard is very intense and full of details. If you’re looking to work on a cruise ship you must be aware of that, because if you play the game you have wonderful results, but if you don’t follow the rules… that’s another history…

Well, onboard we have three kind of employees: officers, staff and crew. Each kind is divided between several ranks or positions. Of course is possible to change departments or get promoted inside your area, but is most likely that you spend years doing the same old sh*t, until you have enough…

That’s it for now… After we arrive in San Francisco I’ll let you know more about the life onboard cruise ships!!

Ciao! Peace out

About Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises first set sail in 1965 with one ship cruising from Los Angeles to Mexico.

In 1974 Princess was acquired by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (better known as P&O).

In 1977, with the premier of the television series “The Love Boat” (I wasn’t even born, but I do recall wachting it in Brazil when I was a teenager), Princess was catapulted to stardom, having its name and logo (the “sea witch”) synonymous with cruising ever since.

After the merger of P&O Cruises and Carnival Co. & plc, in April 2003, Princess and other ten cruiseline companies have become the largest vacation cruise company in the world. Just to have an idea, in 2006 Princess carried more than one million passengers to a wide variety of destinations around the globe (Caribbean, Panama Canal, Alaska, Europe, Mexico and the Exotics). Today, Princess fleet includes 17 ships!

The Princess fleet is divided into three classes:

1> Grand Class – “Big ship choice, small ship feel”. The GC ships carry up to or over 2,600 passengers and were designed so as to avoid having huge crowds of passengers in the same place at the same time.

2> Sun Class – ships from 77,000 to 88,000 gross tons, carrying up to or over 1,950 passengers. Between then are two of the most environmentally friendly ships afloat.

3> Explorer Class – with a little more than 30,000 gross tons, these ships offer many of the luxuries found on larger ships.

This was a brief overview of the cruise industry, wich I hope you enjoined.

I’m heading tomorrow to São Paulo’s international airport “Guarulhos”, from where I’ll take the flight to Washington and get the connection to Seattle. At the state capital I’ll join my ship and future “home”, the Golden Princess, at the port of call.

I’m signing a six to eight months contract. My itinerary can easily be seen at Princess website! Just choose ”Learn About Our Cruises” on top header, then click on “Ships” and go to Golden Princess to check out the wonderful places this ship can take you.

But don’t forget: after I’m on board, this blog will step by step head to its original goal, wich is to give an inside perspective of the world of luxury cruises for those who want to work on the area or are curious about what goes around this magnificiant set!

Peace out!

Finally, a Destination!!

After receiving my vessel’s name, Golden Princess, I was informed about my first destination: Alaska!

I know almost nothing about this magical place, just the vague ideas we have about a farwell land, huge glaciers and exotic animals.

I’m heading to Alaska on July, 19th, from Seattle in a 7 day cruise until almost the end of September.

I’ll post again with more detailed information about my cruise, itinerary and ports of call.

Hope to hear from you.

Gustavo

Where to go

There are several destinations in Princess Cruises, from Asia, through Australia and Northern Europe, Alaska is my probable port to begin my history with the company.

Today I´m heading to Santos (São Paulo) to make my last examination and I hope to receive some information about my travel.

The fact that I still don´t know my destination doesn´t make me any less anxious or fascinated with this idea of working onboard. I have the strangest feeling that I´ll finally discover my true and only passion: work onboard4cruises!!

Hoping to hear from you…
